An Introduction to the Exhibition:



Crafts. There are 24 different craft sections plus special sections for those with disabilities and persons under 18 years. Entries may be entered for judging or for display only. Those entered for judging are eligible for the award of a trophy or certificate. The award of a trophy or a certificate is at the judge's discretion. Only in exceptional circumstances will a trophy be awarded to an entry which does not merit a "gold" certificate. Certificates awarded will be annotated:

  1. "Work of outstanding merit" in gold or
  2. "Work of special merit" in silver or
  3. "Highly commended" in blue or
  4. "Commended" in green or

The award of a trophy will be indicated on the label attached to the entry with the word "Trophy". Certificates will be indicated by coloured labels.

Fine Art. Fine Art entries are chosen for display by a Selection Panel and are for sale unless marked "NFS". There are trophies for the best entry in the Botanical Illustration and Dorset Land or Seascape categories and also for the best novice painter who started painting since reaching retirement age and first painted on or after 1st September 2006.

Photography. Entries for hanging will be selected by a panel and judged by an independent, photographic judge. There are trophies for the best entry in the Wildlife/Nature, Land or Seascape, General and Monochrome categories.
Certificates will be awarded at the discretion of the judge.

Demonstrations. There will be demonstrations of a variety of fine art and craft techniques within the School and on the back lawn. Visitors may have the opportunity to participate in some demonstrations.

"Have-a-Go" Workshops. Children's workshops (ages 5-14 years) are held each morning and afternoon. Topics will change daily and details will be displayed at the Exhibition. A charge will be made for each subject.

Sales. Craftworkers and suppliers of art & craft materials who are members of the Association are invited to take a stall at the Exhibition. Demonstrations at stalls are encouraged. A Challenge Cup is awarded for the best presented stall. Applications to Mrs Myra Jones
Prints, cards, photographs and notelets can also be sold through the "Information and Sales" desk located in the foyer. They must be individually priced and packaged for handling by the public. Application forms to sell work can be obtained from Mrs Jenny GUrden. Payment for all purchases should be made at the "Information and Sales" desk. Commission of 15% will be charged.

Raffle. Tickets for the Association raffle are on sale during the preceding months and at the Exhibition. Tickets are available from the Association Secretary and Committee Members. The draw takes place at 4pm on the Tuesday and proceeds will be devoted to the Association's Bursary Fund.

Catering. Refreshments will be available from 10am to 4.15pm every day.

Travel. Bovington Middle School is close to the Tank Museum and Monkey World. Initially, follow signs for the Museum or Monkey World. Yellow signs to the Exhibition will be displayed on the roads leading to the School.
There is ample car parking. Disabled access and toilets are available.
Frequent buses from Dorchester pass the School and connect with main line trains from Bournemouth, Poole, Wareham, Dorchester and Weymouth at Wool Station. "Coastlinx 53" buses from Lyme Regis, Bridport, Weymouth, Poole and Bournemouth also stop at Wool Station. The School is an easy half mile walk from the Station.



Entering Work into the Exhibition:

Persons living in the County of Dorset and Associate Members are entitled to enter work. All items (Craft, Fine Art and Photography) are entered on the same form. The maximum number of photographs and/or framed pictures is five - there is no limit to the number of craft or portfolio (fine art) entries.

Entries must be the unaided work of the exhibitor(s) and not previously shown at a Dorset Arts and Crafts Exhibition. They should be offered for sale whenever possible - payment through the Sales and Information Desk.


Note: Craft exhibits:
  • Entries will be judged unless there is a contrary indication.
  • Identification marks (which permit a judge to identify the exhibitor) must be removed or obscured - except when work is submitted for display only.

  • The Entry Fee payable for each item, including craft entries submitted for

    display only, is:
    a) Adults£1 per exhibit
    b) Portfolio paintings50p per exhibit
    c) Children and disabled persons 50p per exhibit
    d) Groups£3 per exhibit
    e) Schools/handicapped groups£2 for first exhibit
     £5 for three exhibits, £1 for each additional exhibit.
    **Group Entries may be made for exhibits in all sections. A note must be attached to the work stating the number of persons involved in the production of the work and the assistance, if any, which was given by a tutor.

    Members whose subscription for the current year has been paid by 30th June will receive the fourth and fifth entries free, but must pay for the first three entries and for entries six onwards.

    The Committee reserves the right to refuse to accept exhibits and/or to cancel the judging of a craft section.

    The Association will take all reasonable care of exhibits, but accepts no responsibility for loss or damage. Exhibitors should insure their entries.

    Items entered for sale and sold during the Exhibition remain on display until the Exhibition closes, except in special circumstances - Chairman's discretion

    Payment for items sold at the Exhibition (less 15% commission) will be forwarded by post, within 28 days of the end of the Exhibition.

    Trophies remain the property of the Association. They should be returned to the Association Secretary not later than the "Handing-In Day" for the next year's exhibition.


    Entry Procedure for All Sections

    Complete the "Buff" and "Green" forms.
    See Schools section for schools entry procedure.
    Ensure that for each entry the following information is shown in the lettered columns on both forms:

    Note: Craft entries - tick the box if you do not want work judged!

    Send both forms to the Entries Secretary, to reach her not later than 20th July enclosing a stamped addressed envelope and the entry fee. If the sum to be paid is £2 or less, please pay with small denomination stamps (second class preferred), cheques for larger sums should be made payable to "DACA".

    The Entries Secretary will return the "Green" form to you together with labels bearing the entry number(s) of your exhibit(s) (except fine art entries not offered for sale). The correct label should be attached to each exhibit before it is brought to the School.

    On Monday 27th July ("Handing-In Day") bring your exhibits and "Green" form to Bovington Middle School between 10am and 5pm. Please remove all wrapping before bringing them to the table.

    If you have difficulty in delivering your exhibits please contact a member of the Committee or the Association Secretary so that arrangements can be made for them to be collected and delivered to the School.


    Craft Exhibits

    1. Craft exhibits will be judged according to the Section, Division and Sub-division into which they are entered. The Committee reserves the right to change the Division or Sub division.

    2. Exhibitors should attach details of the materials used, sources of inspiration etc to their entry. Presentation and finish, including information attached, will be taken into account by the judge.


    Fine Arts Exhibits
    1. Pictures must be securely framed with eyelets (or D rings) and a taut cord about 1/3 from the top of the frame. Clip frames are unacceptable. Pictures inadequately framed will not be hung, but (space permitting) will be displayed.
    2. Unframed paintings may be entered for inclusion in the portfolio racks, they must be mounted and covered with clear cellophane.
    3. The name and address of the artist, the title of the work and details of the medium(s) used must be clearly displayed on the back of the entry.
    4. Entries for the Botanical Illustration, Sea/Landscape and Novice trophies should have the letters "B", "L" or "N" marked in red on the back of the entry
    5. Pictures should not be bigger than 30" x 30" (75cm x 75 cm) or equivalent.


    Photographic Exhibits

    1. Entries can be in colour and/or monochrome
    2. Photographs must be mounted on stiff card and not framed.
    3. The minimum size of mounts is 8" x 10" (20cm x 25cm) and the maximum is 16" x 20" (40cm x 50cm).
    4. Mounts should be clean and presentable.
    5. THe entry number (as shown on the green form and label), the title of the photograph and the category in which it is being entered must be clearly displayed on the back of the mount.
    6. Every effort will be made to show all entries, but if space should prove to be limited the Committee reserve the right to select for Exhibition. All entries will be judged.


    Exhibition Sections

    The "Rose Family Trophy" will be awarded to a 2008 Trophy winner whose winning entry from 2008, together with one new entry in the same Section, makes him/her, the person most worthy of the title "Champion of Champions 2009". There is no entry fee.

    The "Corn-utopia Cup" (donated by Audrey and David Rolfe) will be presented to the best exhibit in a Section without a dedicated trophy
